North Ryde is a suburb of Sydney’s North Shore. It is located 15 km north-west of Sydney CBDt in the City of Ryde local government area.

North Ryde includes one of Australia’s largest business districts, home to numerous multinational corporations like Microsoft, Hewlett Packard and Oracle.

This suburb is home to Macquarie University and the Riverside Corporate Park on Delhi Road, home to the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation.

North Ryde was rural until World War II. It had a small population that was primarily engaged in farming. The landscape was dominated by orchards, market gardens and vineyards. The State Government subdivided large swathes of land in the 1950s and 1960s to build Defence Service Homes and other public housing. The district’s character changed dramatically from rural to suburban residential in the years following World War II. Many of the older buildings and dwellings were demolished during North Ryde’s rapid development.

North Ryde NSW is home to many industrial and commercial developments. A small shopping centre, The Cox’s Road Shopping Centre, features a supermarket, a post office and specialty shops. Nearby are the Community Centre, Public School, Library, and School of Arts. A commercial area is also located nearby, with a variety of cafes and restaurants. Blenheim Road also has a row of shops, which includes the Adwill Place Arcade. Avon Road also has a row of shops that offer hairdressing services, cafes and other specialist health care providers.

The Ryde Gardens apartment tower blocks, located on the former Channel 10 site, were the first to be developed in the North Ryde Station Precinct. They also provide access to North Ryde Railway Station. Lachlan’s Line, the next stage of apartment towers is also in progress. A pedestrian and cycleway bridge will be built over Delhi Road, giving direct access to North Ryde Railway Station.

City View Public School was the first school in the district. It opened in 1878. However, it changed its name to North Ryde Public School 1879. This is the earliest mention of North Ryde. Cox’s Road’s original building is a brick-and-sandstone structure built on 1 acre of land donated by Richard Wicks in 1877. It now houses the New South Wales Schoolhouse Museum of Public Education. It is the oldest school building in New South Wales.

Holy Spirit Primary School is a Catholic school located on Cox’s Road. It is slightly downhill from North Ryde Public School. Ryde East Primary School, which has 350 students, is located on Twin Road.

The Macquarie Hospital is bounded on the left by Cox’s and Wicks Roads, Badajoz and Twin Roads. New Horizons Enterprises is part of Macquarie Hospital North Ryde Auxiliary. It operates an acute aged care facility on Badajoz Road. This facility is located on the former New Horizons Service Station. There are sheltered workshops and a Head Office in Twin Road. Arndell Special School (Disturbed Children’s Ward), is located on the Macquarie Hospital Campus, alongside other specialist providers as well as an Education Centre for evaluation and training.

The Northern Suburbs Memorial Gardens and Crematorium is located at 199 Delhi Road in North Ryde and is the second-oldest crematorium in Sydney after Rookwood.

North Ryde is home to many parks and reserves. These include North Ryde Common and the Lane Cove National Park. The Field of Mars Reserve has access to the Great North Walk. There are also several beautiful parks and reserves.
