Marsfield NSW is located on Sydney’s North Shore. Marsfield is 16 kms north-west of Sydney’s central business district, in the City of Ryde local government area.
The name of the suburb is derived form Field of Mars, which was the original name of the area in the early days of British colonisation.
Many streets in Marsfield and the surrounding suburbs have been named after historical conflicts or battles, eg. such as Abuklea Road, Agincourt Road, Alma Road, Balaclava Road, Crimea Road, Culloden Road, Fontenoy Road, Khartoum Road, Plassey Road, Talavera Road, Taranto Road, Torrington Road, Trafalgar Place, Vimiera Road, Waterloo Road.
The “Municipality of Marsfield” split from Ryde Municipality in 1894, forming its own local government.
The historic Curzon Hall, named after Harry Smith in 1890s, was constructed by Harry Smith and named after his wife, Isabella Curzon-Smith. The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul purchased the house in 1921 and established St Joseph’s Seminary there. It is now a function center.
The “Green Belt” was a large area of North Ryde/Marsfield that prevented the construction of houses on lots less than 2 ha (5 acres) until the 1950s. In December 1959, Marsfield-North Ryde Green Belt boundaries were revised. 688 ha (1.700 acres) of land was rezoned. In September 1969, the last Green Belt land was released to construct Macquarie Shopping Centre (Macquarie University).
Marsfield is bordered by the Lane Cove River and Macquarie University Sports Fields, Talavera Road, Culloden Road, Waterloo Road, Vimiera Road, Marsfield Park and Culloden Road in the north, Epping Road, Shrimptons Creek, Kent Road, Ruse Street and Shrimptons Creek in the east, Bridge Road and Abuklea Road in the south and Terrys Creek in the west.
This suburb is characterized by large, modern homes in the upper parts, with great views of the city, and townhouses and units in the areas that border South Turramurra or Epping. Many of the residents are Macquarie University students.
At the 2016 census, 45.6% were semi-detached (townhouses, etc.). 32.2% of occupied private dwellings were detached houses, while 21.0% were apartments, flats, or units. 64.0% of households were family households, 26.6% single-person households, and 9.5% were group households.
